Wuxi United International School open lessons continued this week, with the English and Chinese departments hosting a number of observed classes.
English Department
In Mr. Dewey’s Grade 8 English class students were analysing a text to show how the writing conveys meaning and emotion through the choice of language. Students made inferences to develop their skills at interpreting literature.
In Mr. Geer’s English class the Grade 8’s looked at some of the moral themes running through JRR Tolkein’s “The Hobbit” they began working on a creative way of presenting their ideas as part of a longer-running project.

Ms. Karen’s Grade 9 iGCSE English lesson students looked at an example of argumentative writing by looking at the pros and cons of using chopsticks over a knife and fork. The students practiced their scanning and skimming skills in being able to answer questions on specific points. They shared some good arguments both sides.
In Ms. Shirley’s Grade 11 IB English class the students are preparing for their IB oral assessment, giving a presentation on the driving factors behind immigration. Students came up with deep, driving questions to ask regarding a picture prompt.
In Ms. Sela’s Grade 10 English class students looked at how and the reasons why, some people change their appearance. As well as developing their reading skills students also staged a role play, demonstrating their strong oral English skills.
Chinese Department
In Ms. Alex’s Grade 11 IBDP Chinese class students gave a presentation. The students had a very clear idea about the success criteria for their presentation and reflected on their own and their peers’ work.
Ms. Fiona’s Grade 7 class of Chinese Literature, students learnt about a poem written by the well-known poet of Chinese ancient time – Du Fu and explored the background by understanding the national problems the poet experienced hundreds of years ago. Students participated very well with their prior knowledge and passion of the poem.
Secondary open lessons are still going on at the moment. From the Chinese and English classes, teachers find more possibilities of teaching Languages and Literature. The cultural sharing and interation offers new portals of interdisciplnary communication at WUIS.
