Junior Physics Challenge(JPC)
The British Physics Olympiad is a charitable trust overseen by a committee of trustees. It was initiated in 1979 and has been used as a qualifier for the selection of the UK Physics Team for the International Physics Olympiad since 1983. The topics from which the questions are developed are from Dynamics, Electricity, Optics, Heat, Units, Waves, and Astronomy. The main objective is to create fun, encourage involvement and inspire passion for physics among students. It aims to inspire middle school students to learn physics, and practice practical skills and critical thinking.
In the 2024 Junior Physics Challenge(JPC), students from SUIS Qingpu achieved impressive results with a 100% award rate, securing 5 Gold Awards, 1 Silver Awards, and 5 Bronze Awards.

Student Reflections
In the JPC competition, I deeply experienced the charm of physics. I constantly challenged myself to solve complex problems, and under the guidance of my teacher, I understood the principles of various formulas. This experience not only improved my physics knowledge and broadened the scope of my knowledge, but also exercised my logical thinking and ability to withstand pressure. I look forward to continuing to explore the mysteries of physics in the future, participating in more competitions, and constantly surpassing myself.
Winning an award at the Science Bee was a great honour. Through systematic study and extensive reading, I built a strong knowledge base before the competition. Facing tough questions, I stayed calm and applied my knowledge creatively, achieving a personal breakthrough. This experience not only enhanced my scientific understanding but also strengthened my logical thinking and resilience. I look forward to exploring more scientific challenges in the future!
I am honoured to have won an award and advanced in the Science Bee. I have always enjoyed reading science books, and this competition helped me to expand my knowledge while reinforcing the importance of consistent learning. During the competition, I felt more at ease when I saw the questions, as many concepts were familiar from my readings. This experience has strengthened my passion for science and given me confidence for the upcoming national competition. Interest is the best teacher, and continuous learning is the key to progress!
Reflecting on my journey preparing for the Science Bee, I think that participating in a competition like the Science Bee does not require extensive preparation over a prolonged period, nor does it necessitate rote memorization of facts. This is because it is not a quick-win process. Instead, it relies on a genuine passion for science and the gradual accumulation of scientific knowledge over time. Of course, before the competition, it was necessary to go through several sets of past papers to familiarize ourselves with the rules and the general content of the competition.
Through this competition, I have come to understand the importance of extracurricular scientific knowledge. My regular enjoyment of watching biology documentaries and reading books on chemical experiments allowed me to effortlessly tackle biology and chemistry questions without systematic study. Additionally, the competition revealed several gaps in my physics knowledge which I was able to address. Moving forward, I plan to participate in more such competitions to broaden my knowledge base and refine my scientific skills.
My biggest takeaway was that scoring high is not the main goal of the competition. The primary purpose was the continuous enhancement of my scientific knowledge during the preparation process.
I am honoured to advance to the Science Bee National Round. To supplement my knowledge and English vocabulary for the competition, I did a lot of reading. For example, the original version of A Brief History of Humankind, which I had not finished before, was finished because of this opportunity. This not only enhanced my self-confidence but also gave me a deep appreciation of the meaning of learning through competition. I am looking forward to having the same outstanding performance in the next round.
