Last Wednesday, Ms. Yu Chen, the psychological counsellor of our school, brought a district level open psychological class, themed “Learn to listen, wake your little ears up”. Ms. Tian Yinping, psychological researcher of Qingpu District, and psychological counsellors of primary schools in Qingpu District, visited and gave their suggestions.
“Learn to listen, wake your little ears up”
Some students are eager to express themselves, hoping to gain the attention and respect of others, but lacking awareness and listening skills. In life, they often misunderstand and contradict each other because of an absence of careful listening skills. In classroom learning, they often do not listen to the teacher carefully, which affects the efficacy of their listening.
Therefore we as: how to guide students to realize the importance of listening and to explore their listening skills?
With the theme of “Learn to listen, wake your little ears up” Ms. Yu led the students to experience, comprehend, think and share. Then they summed up “three magic incantations” of listening: do not rush to judge, listen carefully until others have finished; ask appropriately when you are uncertain; concentrate without motion, and respond patiently. Help children to build their own listening skills, internalize listening methods, and become a master of listening.
In order to extend what they’ve learnt in class to life and study, Ms. Yu also arranged special “psychological homework” to encourage students to use the three magic incantations of listening to see if they could make their conversation smoother and gain more friendship from peers.
My goal is to love every single moment.
Living in the present empowers me.
I happily share my knowledge and abilities with the people who are open to me.
Peer discussion, sharing tips
In the seminar, firstly, Ms. Yu shared the design ideas of this psychological activity class from the aspects of teaching materials, learning situation, teaching objectives and teaching process.
The teachers who attended the seminar gave heartfelt encouragement: selection of teaching materials should be based on the learning situation and related to the students’ life. The progressive teaching design should guide students to master listening skills step by step, artfully evaluate and promote students’ expression in the interaction, and cultivate the students’ listening consciousness. Examples of listening presented by ourselves give them good listening models and reinforcement after class is closely combined with school moral education.
After that, psychological researcher Ms. Tian, shared constructive suggestions: pay attention to students’ privacy in all processes, give students the opportunity to practice magic on the spot, and improve students’ self-evaluation of their listening after class. Finally, all the teachers who visited the Psychological Counseling Center at our school are looking forward to more opportunities to visit this beautiful campus again and discuss further the promotion of healthy-minded psychological techniques.
