Welcome to the second Intercontinental Carnival of SUIS Qingpu 2020! A feast of world cultural exchange. Interdisciplinary exploration and learning, parent-child cooperation of home school interaction and a multi-cultural collision of blending will be realized here!
On the morning of October 30, with the bright sunshine, cool wind and wonderful music, SUIS Qingpu holds its annual intercontinental carnival. This year, we travel to Europe to review its history, experience the wonder and listen to the legends.
Each discipline has carefully prepared a number of inquiry topics around European culture, allowing children to conduct interdisciplinary and cross-cultural inquiry learning. According to the learning ability and features of children in each grade, the Chinese teachers have prepared various kinds of European masterpieces to guide children to read and share. The lower grade children read European fairy tales, while the senior students step into the world of mythology created by Eastern European literature giants. The mathematics group holds a magic cube competition that originated in Hungary. You can see students study the mystery of the Rubik’s cube after class. The English teachers lead their children to meet masters of various fields in Europe, learn their stories and famous sayings, and make colorful posters of their learning achievements.
At today’s opening ceremony, the school Nightingale chorus served as the “European peace commission” and sang “Dona nobis Pacem” to express gratitude and praise for a peaceful world. The music teachers brought an Italian folk song Duetto buffo Di due Gatti. The melody moved child’s heart. Our parents and homeroom teachers are also versatile. They jointly performed a European court dance and Spanish Franco. The dance is elegant, bright and moving! There is also a song called “green sleeves”, which tells the glory of the ruined castle in the past, and sings about the land that a determined Scotsman vowed to protect. “The Police” band, composed of talented headmasters and foreign teachers, presents a surprise for the opening ceremony of our carnival!
Besides the performance, the inquiry learning in the classroom is also full of fun. Grade one focuses on northern Europe, from Finland, where Santa Claus originated, to Sweden, the hometown of Nobel. Children learn about Northern Europe from all aspects, from environmental protection, marine animals, to culture, music, and architecture! Grade two and three students focus on central Europe and carefully study every unique country in Central Europe, including the Vatican, the smallest country in the world. Since the Renaissance was born in Central Europe, the teachers took the children to enjoy famous paintings and learn about the great masters of the Renaissance. Senior children head to eastern Europe to learn about the architecture, clothing, and the industrial revolution that influenced the whole world, from puppets originating in Czech Republic to Gothic architectural style, to the steam age and the information age. Children are immersed in it, enjoy the fun of inquiry learning and the joy of sharing the achievements!
