SUIS Gubei held the annual Science Fair Friday, October 25, 2024, in the basketball court. The 2024 SUIS Science Fair theme was COLOR! Groups conducted experiments following the scientific method to test one aspect of color. The Chemistry Summer Holiday Homework helped students formulate Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology research questions of special interest, which G9 and G10PIB students then shared with group members, narrowing ideas down to one, testable, measurable research question. Students were encouraged to choose a research question that interested them, and that they found fun and exciting!
After an in-class brainstorming session, and teacher approval of their research question, students performed the experiments at home between September 13 – October 13, 2024. Students were encouraged to plan experiments using only materials and equipment found at home or in grocery stores.
Over 95 groups submitted Science Fair Displays. Popular experiments included “How the Color of Objects Affects Temperature Change,” “How the Color of Paper/Ink/Tablecloths Affect Memory,” and “How pH Affects the color of Natural Indicators.” Unique projects ideas included “How Color of Habitat Affects Cricket Appetite,” “How Light Refracting on Butterfly Wings Affect the Color Humans See,” and “How Sheet Color Affects the Quality of Sleep.” Up for grabs are 28 different Science Fair Awards ranging from Best overall, Best in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, to the Best Use of Psychology, Plants, Animals, Photography, etc. Awards will also include Best Display, Best Title, and even The Grossest Experiment. Awards will be presented at the G9 Gubei Community Event on December 12, 2024. Students and parents are welcome to attend the Science Fair Awards Ceremony.
