On February 29th SUIS Gubei celebrated World Book Day with a range of literary-themed events. These ranged from intellectually-stimulating contests, such as our poetry and prose writing competitions, to playing the surprisingly physical and intense sport of Quidditch, inspired by the Harry Potter series of novels. Students also engaged in a range of creative and cooperative activities inspired by the literary texts on our English curriculum.

Every student had the opportunity to take part in multiple activities on behalf of their house – but the centerpiece was definitely the Quidditch tournament. Straddling their brooms, students flew (metaphorically!) around the room, aiming to score with their ‘quaffle’ while dodging, ducking, diving and dipping away from the ‘bludgers’ thrown by the Beaters. Particularly notable were the performances of star keeper Hanson Tang (9FA) and all-round team offensive engine Amy Li (11RA). Particular praise must go to Charlie Li (12BT) for his fantastic contribution as a human ‘Golden Snitch’ being hunted by the teams!

In addition to the Quidditch Tournament, students had the opportunity to engage in teamwork-oriented games constructing water pipes and DE-constructing towers, symbolisng the themes of poems and short stories on the English curriculum. Teachers also enhanced the sense of literary fun by dressing up as their favourite literary characters, ranging from classic characters like The Monkey King to more modern literary icons such as Willy Wonka. Students have the opportunity to vote for the most impressive and entertaining costumes, which we are sure will be a difficult decision!
