Teaching English reading is one of the most effective ways to cultivate students’ core literacy. English reading is one of the fundamental courses offered at Wuxi United International School. In order to further promote the regional joint-teaching and research work, increase the reading exchange amongst schools, and effectively improve the quality of primary school English teaching, key staff from our school went to Futian District of Shenzhen (invited by FLTRP) to participate in the 2020 Primary School English Reading Teaching seminar of “village in city” brand schools in Futian District of Shenzhen.
On the afternoon of November 25, 2020, the seminar on English Reading Teaching in Primary School of “village in city” brand school in Futian District was held in the Activity Report Hall of Futian Primary School.
Sun Xiaohui (an expert in reading) and Liu Jiao (editor of FLTRP), were invited to attend the seminar activities.
In one of the many activities held at the seminar, one of our teachers – Miss Rachel (who is the leader of WUIS English department) used the green level of big cat English graded reading book titled ‘Scary Hairy’, to showcase a wonderful reading teaching exhibition.
After the presentation class, she was highly praised by experts and on-site teachers. Sun Xiaohui said, in her on-site feedback, that “I’ve always heard that Wuxi’s English teaching level is very high. Today, after watching our teacher Rachel’s class, we found that the old teacher used the pictures in the picture book to make bold predictions and create a haircut feeling. It simulated children’s interest in dialogue, and constantly expanded their thinking and language training.”
The English Reading course has always been one of the fundamental courses in our school. In daily education and teaching, the school focuses on strengthening students’ English listening, speaking, reading and writing ability, as well as cultivating students’ inquiry learning, promoting students’ thinking development and stimulating students’ innovative consciousness. In the reading course, the children make bold predictions or travel around according to the pictures. The students ask questions independently, discuss with each other, and finally solve problems or the teacher sets up open questions, so that children’s thinking is developed in the process of language learning. In the activities, we also have layered teaching to provide different support to address the different levels of needs of each child.
Finally, we would like to thank FLTRP and Futian primary school for their teaching support and look forward to more interaction in the future!
